What is mild® Procedure?
mild® (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is an outpatient procedure that relieves pressure on the spine, helping patients achieve lasting relief from back and leg pain. It is an early treatment option to consider if more conservative therapies, such as physical therapy or pain medications, are not providing adequate relief.
What Is Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS)?
LSS is the narrowing of the opening in the lower spine. This causes lower back pain, weakness or loss of sensation in the legs.

How common is LSS?
LSS is diagnosed in more than two million patients each year nationwide and is most common in people over 60 years of age due to natural wear and tear.
What are the causes of LSS?
The main cause is arthritis. The bones become spongy as we age resulting in decrease in space between the disks of the spine. This may cause bulging of the hardened disk into the spinal canal and results in the narrowing of the central canal causing lumbar spinal stenosis.
Other factors that can cause narrowing of the spinal canal include osteoarthritis or general thickening of ligament tissue.
How is LSS Diagnosed?
Most physicians will capture your medical history prior to your visit which includes a list of your symptoms. Tests may also be performed to verify LSS, such as:
- Physical exams to test mobility
- Imaging: X-rays, MRI, or CT scan
How does the mild® Procedure help LSS?
The mild® Procedure addresses a major root cause of LSS by removing excess ligament tissue to restore space in the spinal canal. The mild® Procedure typically takes less than an hour and can be performed through a single, tiny incision smaller than the size of a baby aspirin (5.1 mm).
Whether you were recently diagnosed with LSS, have had surgery or are getting epidural steroid injections that are no longer providing pain relief, talk to one of our physicians to see if you are a candidate for the mild® Procedure.
