VIA Disc NP®

A Minimally Invasive Approach to Degenerative Disc Pain

Chronic low back pain can make even simple activities difficult. When pain is caused by degeneration and tissue loss within the discs of the lower back, traditional treatments may not always provide the relief you need.

At Restore Medical Partners, our interventional pain management team offers advanced, personalized treatment options designed to help patients improve function and get back to the activities they enjoy.

VIA Disc NP® is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure designed to supplement tissue within a degenerated lumbar intervertebral disc.

What Is VIA Disc NP?

The discs between the vertebrae of your spine act as cushions, helping absorb shock and allowing your back to move comfortably. Over time, these discs can lose healthy nucleus pulposus tissue—the soft material found in the center of the disc.

VIA Disc NP is an allograft composed of donated human nucleus pulposus tissue and is intended to supplement nucleus pulposus tissue loss in degenerated intervertebral discs.

The goal is to support the natural cushioning function of the affected disc while offering an alternative for appropriately selected patients who continue to experience disc-related low back pain.

Understanding Degenerative Disc Disease

Intervertebral discs naturally change with age. For some people, degeneration can become painful and may contribute to persistent low back pain.

Symptoms associated with lumbar disc degeneration may include:

  • Persistent or recurring low back pain
  • Pain that becomes worse with sitting, bending or certain activities
  • Reduced mobility
  • Difficulty participating in work, exercise or everyday activities
  • Pain that has not improved sufficiently with conservative treatment

Because back pain can have many different causes, determining whether an intervertebral disc is actually responsible for your symptoms is an important part of the evaluation process.

At Restore Medical Partners, our pain management team takes a personalized approach to diagnosing the source of your pain before recommending treatment.

How Does the VIA Disc NP Procedure Work?

VIA Disc NP is performed using a minimally invasive approach.

During the procedure:

1. The Treatment Area Is Carefully Identified

Your physician uses imaging guidance to accurately locate the affected lumbar disc.

2. A Small Needle Is Guided Into the Disc

Using fluoroscopic, or real-time X-ray, guidance, the physician carefully advances an instrument into the nucleus pulposus region of the targeted disc.

3. VIA Disc NP Is Delivered

The VIA Disc NP allograft is placed into the affected disc to supplement lost nucleus pulposus tissue and support the disc’s cushioning function.

Because the treatment is delivered through a needle, it does not require the large incision associated with traditional spine surgery.

Benefits of a Minimally Invasive Approach

For appropriately selected patients, VIA Disc NP may provide an option when conservative care has not adequately addressed disc-related low back pain.

Potential advantages of the procedure include:

  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • No large surgical incision
  • Image-guided placement
  • Treatment directed at the affected intervertebral disc
  • Outpatient procedural approach
  • Relatively limited downtime compared with major spine surgery

Individual results and recovery experiences vary. Your Restore Medical Partners provider will discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternatives based on your specific condition.

Am I a Candidate for VIA Disc NP?

VIA Disc NP is not appropriate for every type of back pain.

You may be considered for treatment if you have chronic low back pain associated with lumbar disc degeneration or nucleus pulposus tissue loss and have not received adequate improvement from appropriate nonsurgical care.

Your evaluation may include:

  • A detailed medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Review of previous treatments
  • Review of MRI or other diagnostic imaging
  • Evaluation of the specific location and cause of your pain

Your physician will determine whether your symptoms are consistent with disc-related pain and whether VIA Disc NP should be considered as part of your individualized treatment plan.

What Can I Expect After the Procedure?

Recovery instructions vary depending on the patient and the number of discs treated.

Patients may be instructed to temporarily limit strenuous physical activity following the procedure. Your physician will provide specific guidance regarding walking, exercise, work and other activities.

Some soreness or discomfort around the injection area may occur following an intradiscal procedure.

It is important to follow all post-procedure instructions and attend any recommended follow-up appointments so your care team can monitor your progress.
